If you’re looking to simplify your household chores without spending a fortune on specialty products, the best solutions are often already hiding in your pantry or around the house. Leveling up your laundry routine is all about working smarter, not harder, using clever shortcuts to keep your fabrics looking and feeling like new.

From preserving the deep colors of your favorite outfits to reviving flat bedding, these simple, natural additions to your wash day will save you time and help your essentials last longer. Here are three effortless laundry hacks that every home needs.

1. HOW TO CLEAN WASHING MACHINE

It’s strange how washing machines usually clean our laundry but they can get really dirty as well. Mold usually grows on the rubber gasket in the machine and this is the best way to get rid of the mold.

Instructions:

Get a bottle of vinegar, a clean cloth or brush, and a box of baking soda. Now get a container(dish, bowl, etc) to mix the vinegar and baking soda in.

Pour 2 cups of vinegar in the container then sprinkle 2 cups of baking soda in it then mix the two. After mixing you should get the brush or cloth and dip them into the mixture and use them to wipe away the mold from the rubber gasket.

2. Glycerin

Glycerin is a low-key powerhouse for laundry when it comes to loosening grime, reviving fibers, and boosting softness without heavy chemicals.

3.Instructions:

To use it, mix 1 tablespoon of liquid vegetable glycerin into 1 cup of warm water and stir until fully blended. Lightly pour or spray the solution directly onto heavily soiled areas like collars, armpits, or stiff fabric zones, gently massaging it in with your fingers so it penetrates the fibers.

Let it sit for 20–30 minutes to break down buildup and residue, then wash as usual with your regular detergent on a normal cycle.

For dry, scratchy fabrics (like towels or work clothes), add ½ tablespoon of glycerin directly into the fabric softener compartment during the rinse cycle—this helps restore flexibility and softness without coating the fabric or trapping odors. It’s a clean, simple way to refresh laundry while keeping fibers breathable and residue-free.

4. Spice Up Your Wash Cycle with black pepper

Did you know that black pepper is a secret weapon for keeping your clothes vibrant? Over time, soap residue can build up on fabric fibers, making colors look dull and faded.

Instructions:

To prevent this, simply add a teaspoon of finely ground black pepper directly into the washing machine drum with your colored load.

The pepper acts as a very mild abrasive, loosening that dingy soap buildup before it can settle, and then it simply washes away in the rinse cycle. Your blacks will stay deeper and your brights will stay punchy without any extra chemicals.

5. The Tennis Ball Trick

If you’re tired of your heavy blankets and winter jackets coming out of the dryer looking flat and lumpy, grab a few tennis balls.

Instructions:

Tossing two or three clean tennis balls into the dryer helps break up clumps of wet stuffing by constantly bouncing against the fabric as it tumbles.

This improves airflow between the layers, which actually speeds up the drying time and prevents that “crunchy” feel. Just be sure to use plain, clean balls—or tuck them inside a clean white sock—to ensure no bright yellow fuzz transfers onto your favorite quilt.

6. Instant Pillow Fluffing

There is nothing worse than a flat, sad pillow, but you can bring it back to life with a quick heat treatment.

Instructions:

Place your pillows in the dryer on a low or medium heat setting for about 15 minutes. The warmth helps expand the fibers and remove any moisture trapped from sweat or humidity that causes clumping.

For maximum volume, give them a good manual “massage” from the sides toward the center before and after the cycle. They’ll come out looking brand new and feeling much more supportive for your next night’s sleep.

7. HOW TO REMOVE FOOD STAINS FROM WHITE SHIRTS

Having stains on shirts can make the best-looking outfits look terrible. So that’s why I put this tip on here because removing stains from white clothes can be very difficult to do.

This is because we don’t want to ruin it. The best way to remove food stains from white clothes is to mix 2 cups of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda together.

Doing this will create a sticky substance.  Now get a spare toothbrush and dip it into the mixture and use it to gently scrub the stained areas on the shirt.

Do this for as long as you want but be careful not to overdo it because this might mess up the material on the white shirt(let the mixture sit on the shirt for a couple of minutes).

Now after doing that you should place the shirt into the washing machine and use 2 cups of borax, diluted bleach, and your favorite laundry detergent to wash it.

After washing and drying it your white shirt will be looking stainless and cleaner than ever.

8. HOW TO UN-SHRINK SHIRTS

Sometimes shirts usually get smaller over time not because you are getting bigger but because it’s shrinking. Shrinking? You might ask; yes shirts and blouses tend to shrink a lot because we always wash and dry them ( which you should).

When washing your shirts or blouses try not to use warm water. If you keep washing them in warm water your clothes will eventually get a bit smaller.

If you already had a shrunken blouse or shirt and want them to fit properly again you need to try this trick. First, get a bucket of cold water and squeeze about 3 cups of conditioner in the water then place the shirt or the blouse in it and spin them around inside the bucket.

Do this for 3 minutes. After that, you should let the clothes stay in the bucket for a couple of hours usually overnight.

Then after a couple of hours take out the shirt, hold the top part of the shirt( the neck/collar area) and hold the bottom part of the shirt, then stretch.

Keep stretching until the shirt starts to become a bit longer(be sure not to rip the shirt). After stretching the shirt rinse it in the sink then let it air dry(use a hanger and hang it somewhere in your house).

9. Boost Clean Clothes Smell

If your clothes is not smelling so good after washing don’t panic, you can still make your laundry smell better. Well, there is a quick and simple way to make funky clothes smell better without washing again.

Instructions:

The first thing you need is a container. Then fill up 1/2 of that container with water then pour 3-4 cups of fabric softener in it. Then place a couple of clean washcloths in the container.

Then let them sit there for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes take out the washcloths and wring them dry, and place them in the dryer with your laundry.  This will make your clothes smell so much better.

10. DON’T MIX WASH

When washing your clothes do not mix them together and throw them in the machine because doing this is will cause you some trouble because some clothes color may run on some of your other clothing and your white clothes wont be cleaned properly.

The End:

The best way to wash on laundry day is to group your clothes together. This means you should not wash colored clothing separately from whites, wash clothes that can stain other clothing by themself, and don’t wash wool clothing with other clothes. And always wash your white clothing last. This is because when most people wash white clothing they tend to use bleach on them and you don’t want to mess up your colored clothing with bleach.
