Ever had an annoying grease stain on your shirt or pants? Of course, you have, almost everybody has had a grease or oil stain on their clothes, and it’s pretty annoying to deal with. There are many methods on how to get grease stains out of clothes but only a few of them really works. Today I am going to show you how to get grease out of your clothes using the best methods.

1. Cornstarch or Baby Powder Oil Lift

Cornstarch and baby powder both absorb grease effectively, especially on fresh stains. Sprinkle a thick layer over the stain and allow it to sit for 30–60 minutes. Once the powder absorbs the oil, brush it away and rinse the area with warm water. Wash as usual and inspect before drying.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide for Set-In Grease

Hydrogen peroxide can help lift older grease stains, especially on light-colored fabrics. Apply a small amount directly to the stain and let it sit for several minutes as it begins breaking down the oil. Blot gently with a clean cloth, then rinse thoroughly. Always test this method on an inconspicuous area first to prevent discoloration.

3. Baking soda

If you know anything about cleaning you’ll not be surprised that baking soda is great at removing tough stains. So it makes sense that baking soda can remove grease and oil stains as well.

To remove grease stains from your clothes with baking soda you first need to get a small dish of warm water. Then sprinkle some of the baking soda onto the grease stain. Dip a toothbrush into the warm water and rub it all over the baking soda. Make sure to rub the baking soda all over the grease stains. Keep doing this until the stain starts to disappear, then place the clothes in the washer.

3. White Vinegar De-greasing Soak

White vinegar helps cut through grease by breaking down oily residue left in clothing. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water and soak the stained area for 20–30 minutes. After soaking, gently rub the fabric together to loosen the grease. Rinse well and launder in warm water, checking the stain before drying.

4. Dish Soap and Baking Soda Scrub

For stubborn grease stains, combining dish soap with baking soda creates a powerful cleaning paste. Mix equal parts dish soap and baking soda, then spread it over the stain. Gently scrub the area using a soft toothbrush to work the mixture into the fibers. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes before rinsing with warm water and laundering as usual.

5. Rubbing Alcohol Spot Treatment

Rubbing alcohol helps dissolve grease and oil trapped in fabric fibers. Place a clean cloth beneath the stained area and dab rubbing alcohol onto the stain using a cotton ball or pad. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This method works particularly well on jeans, uniforms, and work clothes.

6. Enzyme-Based Stain Remover Method

Enzyme stain removers are designed to break down grease at a molecular level. Apply the remover directly to the stain and gently massage it into the fabric. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, or longer for heavy stains. Wash in warm water and air dry to ensure the grease stain is completely removed.

7.Dish soap

This is another great way of removing grease stains from any clothing. The best dish soap that’s good for this is Dawn. Dawn is excellent at removing grease from almost anything. There are two ways in which you can use dawn dish soap to remove grease from your clothes, they are both similar but somewhat different.

To get rid of grease out of your clothes using dish soap you need to do the following:

  1. Squirt a few drops of dish soap onto the greasy area of the garment and use your fingers to rub it in.
  2. Then use a wet toothbrush to gently scrub the grease out of the garment.
  3. After doing this you should rinse and place the shirt inside the washing machine.
  4. (optional) or you can get a large bucket of warm water and add your favorite laundry detergent to it.
  5. Then place the garment into the bucket of water and let it soak for 1-2 hours.
  6. After doing that you should place it in the dryer.

8. Wd-40

While I don’t believe that wd-40 will work as best as the other methods on this list I still do believe that you should at least try it.

To get rid of grease or oil stains using wd-40 you need to spray the grease with wd-40 and use a damp cloth to rub the stained area. Then place the clothing into the washer. If the garment still has the grease stain on it then maybe you should try a different method that’s on this list.

Another issue with using wd-40 on clothes is that while it will get rid of the grease stains, you’ll still have the wd-40 residue on the clothes.

9. Dawn Dish Soap and Warm Water Method

Dish soap is designed to break down grease, making it especially effective on oily stains. Mix a small amount of Dawn dish soap with warm water and apply the solution directly to the stained area. Work it into the fabric gently, then allow it to sit for up to one hour so the grease can fully dissolve. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and repeat the process if the stain remains visible.

10. Salt and stain remover

This might be the weirdest method in this article but you should definitely try it because it might be the most effective. For this method what you want to do is to dampen the grease/oil-stained area of the clothes with water and then sprinkle salt all over the stained area. Let the salt absorb the grease for around 3-5 minutes. Then spray the grease with this stain remover. After spraying the garment, you should place it in the washer and let it wash with the warmest water option.

11. Baking Soda Absorption Technique

Baking soda works well on fresh grease stains by absorbing excess oil before it spreads. Sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda directly over the stain and allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes. As it sits, the powder pulls grease out of the fabric fibers. Brush off the baking soda, rinse with warm water, and wash the garment as usual.

Doing this will remove all the grease stains that were on the garment.

13. Wash, Air Dry, and Recheck

After treating grease stains, always wash the garment in warm water unless the fabric label says otherwise. Avoid using a dryer until you are sure the stain is completely gone, as heat can permanently set grease into fabric. Let the garment air dry and inspect it closely. If any trace of grease remains, repeat the treatment before drying.

Conclusion

While I do believe that all of these methods will definitely get rid of grease stains, I still recommend only trying the wd-40 method last as the rest are way more effective.
