Intro-Sheepskin rugs are great to have in your home. Not only do they make the rest of your room look decorated but they are also very comfortable as well. But Washing them seems to be a problem for most people. In this article, I will be showing you how to clean a sheepskin rug the right way.

Can you wash a sheepskin rug?

The answer to this is yes, you can wash your sheepskin rugs. There are actually two ways you can wash them. You can either use a washing machine or do it manually. Now I will show you how to clean your sheepskin rugs at home without paying for professional cleaners.

How do you clean a sheepskin rug?

To clean a sheepskin rug the right way, you need to have the following:

Things you need:

  • Sheepskin detergent/shampoo
  • Sheepskin wool carding brush
  • Large towel

After gathering these things it is now time to clean your rug by following these steps.

Step1- use the wool carding brush to brush the rug. When brushing a sheepskin rug you want to make sure that you get rid of all the knots out of it.

Step 2- fill the bathtub or a large container up with 1/4 cold water and add around 50ml of sheepskin shampoo/detergent into it. Then use your hand to swish around the soap in the water.

Step 3- Then swish and squeeze the sheepskin rug inside the bathtub/ large container water for 3-5 minutes.

Step 4- release or throw away the dirty water and fill it up again. Now it’s time to swish and squeeze the rug again. Do this several times until the water starts to stay clear when you wash it.

Step 4- Allow the sheepskin rug to drain then after that place it into the washing machine so it can be somewhat dry (drain and spin).

This will make your sheepskin rug look white again.

These steps showed you how to clean your sheepskin without damaging it, but there are still a few more steps you should follow but for now, I am going to tell you how to wash your sheepskin rug in a washing machine.

How to wash sheepskin rug in a washing machine

Before you wash your sheepskin rug in the washer you have to do two things:

  • Make sure your sheepskin rug is a single pelt.
  • Check the bottle of sheepskin detergent/shampoo to make sure you use the right amount when washing your rug.

After you do these two things it is now time to wash your rug. Just place the sheepskin rug inside the washing machine then pour the right amount of sheepskin detergent into it.

Be sure to use cold water as hot water may damage the rug.

Washing a sheepskin rug in a machine might give you a better wash than just using your hands but I still prefer doing it manually because I think it is much safer.

How to dry sheepskin rug

When drying a sheepskin rug you want to make sure that you don’t expose it to too much heat. This includes under direct sunlight and other really warm areas. This does not mean you cant dry them in a dryer because you can. To dry your sheepskin rugs in a dryer all you have to do is place them in it and set the dryer to warm not dry. If your dryer has the option always choose the lowest temperature.

Even though using a dryer is effective I still strongly recommend that you use the method that I am about to show you. You might be wondering where to put the sheepskin rug to dry? Well just do the following.

Another way of drying your sheepskin rug is to first put a large towel on a  flat surface like a table and then place the rug on top of the towel. Make sure that the rug isn’t folded and it is also best if you keep it away from direct heat such as sunlight and other heaters.

This is a good and safe way to make your sheepskin rugs dry but it may be a while until they are really dry.

How to make sheepskin rug soft again

So you finally cleaned your sheepskin rug but there is another issue. The rug isn’t as soft and fluffy as before. Well before you freak out just know that you need to do one thing. Just use a sheepskin rug brush. Brush the rug for around 3-5 minutes. Using this brush will fluff up your rug and it will keep it fluffy. The best sheepskin rug brush can be found right here.
